In the United States, the likelihood of a first marriage lasting for 20 years is about 50%. That is, you will have an equal chance of lasting 20 years, or getting divorced. And the USA is actually third — behind the nations of the Maldive Islands and Belarus — in this dubious statistic. A recent article by Amanda Foreman in the February 2014 edition of the Smithsonian Magazine chronicled this and other observations about divorce, especially it’s history in England, from which so many of our laws and legal customs derive. It’s fair to say that, but for political struggles between the king of England and the Pope, divorce might be much more difficult to accomplish in our nation.
